Recap & Top Ten 30 for 30 Tips

It looks waaaaay more impressive all tiled together like this. Any other month, it's just getting dressed - this month, it was a 30 For 30!

Honestly these might not be my real Top 3, I had a super hard time narrowing it down. I loved my plaid/leopard outfit, and the chambray/fur combo, my very first look and my very last look. I was surprised at how hard it was to style the easy things (the red blazer, the blue skirt) and how easy it was to style the hard things (the python shirt, the sequin dress). Advice nugget: don't be scared to put those weird things in your closet in your 30 for 30! It'll be a freaking party.

Notice anything the Bottom 3 have in common? White jeans. And they were all outfits I threw together the morning of. Turns out the two are related. Whenever I'm lazy and don't plan things, I fell back on the safest pair of pants in my shrunken closet and went from there, and I haaaaaated it. My advice? PLAN PLAN PLAN. Don't just wake up in the morning and expect birds to sing and angels to come down from on high and dress you. Do something about it.

Top Ten 30 for 30 Tips

1. Include an equal number of collared shirts and non-collared shirts for easier layering. All pullovers or all button downs would be bad news bears.

2. Throw some crazies in there, chicken!

3. ... but don't deprive yourself of normal things. Like jeans.

4. Keep your thirty items separate from the rest of your closet, if you can. It makes it easier to focus.

5. Take an hour or two on the weekend to try on some different things together. Lay everything out on your bed, try everything on in front of a full-length mirror and take pictures with your iPhone - so many of my outfits this month were things that sounded like poop salad on paper but turned out pretty awesome in real life.

6. UNFORTUNATELY the reverse is also true. Things that sound stellar on paper sometimes look like poop salad in real life, but you won't know until you're standing in front of that mirror with a camera.

7. Save those iPhone pics! They make getting dressed easy, because you can scroll through your phone from the comfort of your nice warm bed until the last possible minute when you absolutely have to get up and get ready.

8. Try really hard not to wear the same thing twice. 30 items is enough for way more than 30 outfits, so that's no excuse.

9. Get used to wearing the same piece two days in a row sometimes! You won't die or spontaneously combust. And no one notices, I promise.

10. This is not boot camp! There are no rules, really. They're more like guidelines.

Would you guys link up if we did a 30 for 30 support group in January? Say yes! Say yes! It'll be so much fun and if you don't I'll hunt you down and stuff. :)

    1. They're mostly J.Crew, but I find almost all of them on eBay! If you know your size and you're willing to do a little stalking you can get them for under $50 a lot of the time, which I think is good.

  6. I'd love a 30x30 link up! But I feel like I wouldn't really be able to truly do it because of the whole wearing a suit in court thing. I'd def participate on days I don't have to go to court though!

  11. I love all your outfits! My favorites are the one with the red blazer and black pants (#9?) and the 2nd one on the bottom row :)

I did two 30 for 30 challenges almost two years ago (one winter, one summer) and I've got to say, the winter one was a lot more fun than the summer one because of the layering. It's harder to be creative in the summer! I don't know if I'd ever want to do one again because though, even though it DID make getting dressed easy. I think I just hated having to take photos everyday :)

    1. Taking pictures every day was for sure the hardest part - which is why it took me way more than 30 days, because some weekends I was just NOT having it. I agree though, the summer one would be super hard.

    1. Gray and tan and white are like my favorite clothes colors. Add some brights in there, if you're anything like me you already have a bazillion neutrals to wear with them, which is a bonus!

  15. Sam, I might consider doing this in February 28x28 -2 days less to beat my brain what to wear :-D

But I really need this app that comes with the cake, you know what I am talking about, huh? ;-) hahahahahaha

My favourite is the leather pants with the plaid shirt and the fur... We would call it glamourisish in my universe :-D

2nd price goes to the black and white pattern dress with the red blazer, so my style :-)

BUT you rocked all those 30 outfits so sassy nuggetly :-)

Maaaaaybe you should just move to the states. You'll have boyfriend, cake, and me. What more could a girl ask for? :P

And I love your tips too. Especially the one about wearing the same piece back-to-back. I do it all the time and haven't spontaneously combusted (yet!)

I'm still on the fence about trying this - I know that my organizational skills are on point...but my creativity may be lacking.
Maybe a mini-session in December to see if I'm ready for the full challenge in January -

  24. I've often thought about doing this, but I worry I wouldn't do very well, since most of my wardrobe is made up of dresses! I see you used mainly skirts - do you think that's a better way to go than loads of dresses?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think you could do either, you'd just have to be better than I am at remixing dresses! Shirts under them shirts over them, skirts over them to wear them as tops, sweaters and boots and tights with them... you could do it for sure.

  25. SO doing this for the month of January! I am not one for too much color (I tend to stick with mostly neutrals) so mine might be a bit more boring but I still can't wait to start this fashion challenge :) I will be doing my 30x30 on my blog, which can be found @ http://wearablefunfashion.blogspot.com/

Also, question! Did you include shoes & accessories in your list of 30 items? This is pretty essential info hehe ;)
